Christmas day I started recording again. The time of the year to work! This village located in the east of Bali is known for the people and their culture. They where the first to live on bali before the javanese hindoes came here. They have a different tuned gamelan called gamelan selonding. I had the chance to record 7 songs of this music having a session of 2,5 hours. I wish I could share this on my blog but unfortunately internet is really slow here making it impossible to even upload pictures. I did have a great time recording again. But I keep on finding out that people find it difficult to understand what I do making it difficult for me to record.

Bye Yogya, hello Bali
After 3,5 weeks of assisting the teams in technical problems and meeting a lot of people. It's finally time for me to strike down for a chill in Bali.
Yogya treated me really good and I'm very happy that I've met a lot of the people of the creative scene there. Also thanks to Piet Hein and André for all their knowledge and to the 3 inspiring groups I was privelidged to help you out. I've learned a lot, next time I hope to make a project with them!
No time for a little chilling out. I think I deserved it after the work I've done last 1,5 month. Medan and Yogya were great experiences!

Goodbye Medan
Citysoundscape Medan 2012 ended yesterday. For 12 days I was assisting Piet Hein and 9 participants to make a soundscape. It was an intense project with long days, but most of all it was a lot of fun and I've learned a lot. Also a littlebit of the Batak Toba language. Horas!
I had the honour to meet some great people and to help on this project. A wonderful experience!
Pictures will follow soon!

Rollercoasting through Medan
Allright,
After helping in a few composition classes and asking around for tradiotional music. I found my way to USU (Universitas Sumatra Utarra)
Accompanied by myself I took an ankot (local minibus transport) to the university. I'd heared that there was a department of ethnomusicology and I started asking around.
Immediatley I was brought to the head of the department and before I knew I was joining a class and drumming to Padang music. When I finished this class I heard music from the Toba lake next door.
Personally this music makes me very happy. It's very rithmic, uptempo music. The dance to this music is called Tor-tor. So I didn't hasitate to have a look. They were very nice young students and when I told my plans they were happy to coöperate with me.
Yesterday I returned with all my gear and we recorded for almost 4 hours. I showed them how I make music and how ableton live worked. I'm happy that I'm recording in quite an early stage. It's quite exciting to go to a place and ask; "hey I like your music, can I put a microphone on your face?". Also for them this is not common phenomenon.
After we recorded they put me on the right ankot. Nothing here brings you closer to the culture as riding an ankot. Especially the one I took yesterday! Switching 4 lanes in one time, pulling up from 0 to 60 for 10 meters then hitting the brakes again. I wish we had rollercoasters like this! I think in 20 minutes we almost crashed 7 times.
Last time I hated this city, but now I see it's very interesting. Christians, muslims an Hindoes are living in harmony together and extremism is far fetched. While I see daily conflicts in the middle of Sulawesie where unfortunately muslims and christian still have to learn to live in peace.

Burning Hot Jakarta
Books say 10 million but people here say 15 to 18 million.
I know it's a lot of people and motorbikes everywhere!
Combine this with a temperature of 35 'C and a lot of different fumes coming from all direction and you have Jakarta.
The day I arrived it was a Muslim holiday called Hari Adah. This is a holiday where people offer goats and cows. It's unbelievable how many little temporary stalls where made to supply these people with goats and cows. This also brought three days of non-stop eating and going to eating appointments. What a time to arrive, I think I all ready gained 3 kilo's!
But for now it's enough and tomorrow I'm off to Medan (North Sumatra) which is totally the opposite direction of my original plan, but there is a very interesting project I want to attend.
Finally I'm going to record this country again, I can't wait!!
Stay tuned!
